Looking to start (or join) a game but aren't sure what to do? Here are some roleplay game type examples and recommendations to get you started on your adventure!
1)Play-by-Post (PbP)
This game mode is flexible, and often the easiest to get into. Members post a detailed description of "what happens next."
Basically, one person starts off a scenario. The members who follow after must reply with "what happens next." The member after them must follow up with what they do after that, and it continues like that indefinitely, or until members agree on a conclusion.
The rules are that no one can make any "god" actions, such as saying "and then everyone blew up." Everyone MUST be in character at all times, and NO ONE may make an action for another player. You MUST make actions ONLY for yourself.
You may ONLY use skills that you currently know, or that are basic, such as running, jumping, climbing, hitting someone with a pot, etc.
Any rewards gained in this game mode must be approved by staff. So, if someone says they smashed a pot and 1,000 rupees came out, a staff member may jump in and say "but a kargarok came in and swooped it all away."
However, if staff agrees with your roleplay decisions, rupees or items may actually find their way into your inventory.
Be reasonable. Don't give rewards that are blatantly too hefty for the actions performed!
This game mode may be started by any member, and may be joined by as many people as the person who started it decides! The creator acts as a "moderator" as well, so if they do not agree with your action or with your attitude, they may let a staff member know. If the action is unreasonable or rude, staff may intervene.
This game mode is meant to be lax, however, so if a game doesn't go the way a creator wants it to, but is still following forum rules, then the creator must suck it up and play.
Combat is casual and up to the players. The forum combat formula does not need to be followed. But remember: you probably can't 1-shot a boss!
Also, remember to take turns. Try not to post every other post. Give other players a chance! If no one else posts for 24 hrs, you may post every other turn until other players return.
Please note, there are stricter, less-casual PbPs that are generally private or have heftier rules; these are general guidelines, but do not encompass all PbPs.
2)GMed
The most complicated mode, a single GM runs a campaign and dictates a complex adventure. This game mode is the closest to traditional tabletop games. Players may encounter enemies, face difficult decision-making challenges, or have to pass skill checks, at the will of the GM and the luck of numerical rolls.
Players take turns performing actions. If more than two players are present, players must wait two turns before performing another action. If it is a player's turn and they do not post for 24 hrs, their turn is skipped, and they may make an action when they return.
After every 4 player turns (posts), or if all players have had 1 turn, players must wait for the GM to process the outcome of the actions. Anyone who posts before the GM has had a chance to go will have their turn ignored.
Members may join mid-campaign, but they may have to wait to be introduced at GM discretion, such as if the group is mid-combat.
Combat is calculated using standard Dungeons & Darknuts combat rules.
Rewards are given at GM discretion, typically during appropriate points of completion, such as after fights, or upon dungeon completion.
GMs MUST be approved by Staff. GMs who get clearance once will be added to a GM user group, and will be permitted to start future games of this type without the need of further approval.
3)Dungeon Crawl
Although all of the other game modes may include dungeon crawl components, this game type is generally shorter, and includes ONLY a single dungeon. This dungeon is formatted like a "choose your own adventure," where the dungeon creator walks a single person, or a small group of people, through a dungeon of their own invention. This game mode is run ONLY by staff OR by members who have gotten staff approval for their dungeon design. This is because rewards are given upon dungeon completion, so the dungeon must be sufficiently difficult for the player(s) joining.
After a game is approved, users who manage the Dungeon Crawl game will be added to a Dungeon Crawl Master user group, and will not need staff approval the next time they create a game of this type.
Combat is calculated using standard Dungeons & Darknuts combat rules.
Please note: When starting your own adventure, please specify the game type somewhere in the starting post. That way both members and staff alike can know what to expect.
Additionally, if you are managing a game, you do not need to be in character! If you are PLAYING, however, you must be!
