Nickname: Feathers
True Name: ?
Race: Hyrulian
Origin: Ama-In, Northern Snowpeak
Profession: Merchant; Resolute Duelist
A Curiosity Among Curiosities
The labyrinthine corridors of Hyrule’s bazaars always have something for those who seek to spend. The typical adventurer may search for equipment or tools to add to their demanding arsenal of tricks– certainly nothing Beedle’s or the Battle Shop (and more) wouldn’t be able to handle. But for those simply seeking to add variety to the mundane– or in other words, anyone with spare rupees to freely squander on non-essentials– there’s always the thoroughfare’s countless peddlers seeking to exchange trinkets for a little bit of financial stability. And lately, there seems to be another whose foreign trinkets have caught the eye of collectors around the land…
“Heya, hi! Over here!!”
Like a gull’s high-pitched squawks amidst the deafening roar of the waves, a raven-haired Hyrulian raises her voice to compete with the unceasing bustle of the market. There she stood, perched high atop her station to grab the attention of passersby. “Kurama Goods! Nowhere else in the world like here!”
Those who take a gander at her auspiciously decorated cart would find an assortment of items brought all the way from beyond Snowpeak. From fine clothes to lacquerware, one could easily squander a fortune on rarities she claims to have originated from faraway nobility. For those with a shallow purse, some candies or home-decor would be kinder to the wallet.
But who exactly is this lass making her new home in the hustle of the bazaar?
The Wandering Breeze
This cheerful merchant would introduce herself as Feathers, a mountain-born traveler who has descended to exchange all manner of culture and knowledge with the rest of the world. Those who are knowledgeable on lesser-known civilizations may recall the distant people who had just recently ended their isolationist period. Texts published throughout the kingdom speak of the Tengu from Ama-In civilization that make their homes in the frigid mountains. Indeed, this merchant is one such person and the first one to descend at that– something to which she would proudly confirm.
Any curious patron could simply ask about a humble piece of merchandise, to which she will answer back with a barrage of historical descriptions, practical uses, and maybe even a quick fable or two. She is not one to deny a fun conversation; even better so if she were to receive one in return.
To Feathers, the warmth of new contacts in this ever-so-curious city is something worth sparing a minute (or several hours) of work for. This is, according to her, a far cry from the rigid silence of her hometown. Her Ama-In village placed great value on order and ceremony after all. Everything has its place, and all must be perfectly aligned to properly align with the whims of the great mountain spirits. Feathers found such customs too stifling, and perhaps it was fortunate that she was born to a family that was in favor of the end to Ama-In’s self-isolation. She and her beloved father would joke that the village losing her was like losing the warmth of the sun– a bold claim, but whether anyone would bother traveling all the way to confirm such words (and survive the cold) is yet to be seen.
When stocks begin to dry up and her next batch of goods has yet to arrive, Feathers would support herself by adopting the life of an adventurer. Though unfamiliar with the land, she could at least count on her combat skill as an additional force to bolster an adventuring party’s strengths. Different mysteries react to different solutions, but all creatures fear the sting of death. Her outgoing and upbeat personality also translates in a way to her style on the battlefield. Favoring the heft of large blades, Feathers uses the power of momentum and her lithe frame to maneuver around a battle. With graceful weaves into flamboyant swings, she prefers the dance of the frontlines where she could catch enemies’ attention long enough for her allies to prepare the finishing blows.
Faint Footsteps in the Snow
“The very first to learn what lies beyond the mountains of Kurama… Nobody’s better suited to such a task than I!”
Feathers was born and raised during the post-isolationist era of Ama-In, and had lived to see the struggles of a once sheltered civilization clumsily open its gates to the world– or anyone brave enough to challenge the cold of Snowpeak at least. Within the next two decades, more and more scholars ventured through newly created roads to see for themselves what wonders the Tengu had in store.
A hunter-gatherer society was not unusual for remote settlements in these areas and Ama-In was no exception. What did stand out though, was the unique brand of druidic magic and architecture that developed over their long history. Many found their unique method of infusing their animistic religion with their daily life a fascinating point of study. This was the center of the first set of cultural exchanges, which eventually gave way to diplomacy and trade routes.
Even then, very few Tengu were hospitable to the sudden influx of outsiders. Most refused to provide the most basic decency and often took to snubbing visitors if not intimidating them into going home. Besides the hanging wariness over the sudden change of lifestyle, the language barrier made for quite the challenge for the first years out of isolation.
It was the younger generation, to nobody’s surprise, that quickly grew accustomed to such unusual times. Those who were born after the Ama-In opened their gates grew up to be bilingual, and even adopted many mannerisms that were brought in by visitors. Feathers in particular was of a reckless and loud attitude previously unheard of in a culture that values moderation and respect for silence. There are many stories of hunters fearing a shrieking monster in the mountains, when such things turn out to be Feathers tripping in the snow or accidentally provoking the crow familiars into pecking at her hair.
The elders bear a ferocity as frigid as Snowpeak’s permafrost, but it is the youth that shine with a warmth like the distant sun above.
Feathers and most of her family are quite accommodating. Talk to the right people and one would never be turned down out of principle alone. It was this kind of upbringing that would in turn, be the catalyst for Feathers to become the first informal traveler to descend the mountains.
