"This is all I have please chief don't destroy it!" Ilum said crying
"This book is what caused the problem. You steal everything you get your hands on. You took the scale when you were to young we told you you could get it when you were old enough. Valoo has become angry at us and even attacked you. Or did you forget why you are bleeding?"
Ilum was bleeding from her chin from when she used the skill she learned in the book on Valoo, the trick called Simple Trick. The book that was all that she had left from the fire that took her home, her parents, everything that she owned in her young life. She would remember that day for the rest of her life.
She and her parents lived a little off from everyone on the Dragon Roost Island a little to far. The fire was caused by a simple mistake a little one if you think about it, the edge of a cloth catching fire from a unwatched stove. Her mother was making stew that day and was pulled a way to play with her child Ilum who was only five at the time. Her favorite game was house, a little kids game. She always loved playing with her mom and dad at the game. The fire spread fast like everything was as dry as it would be in a desert. The kitchen was next to the front door and was covered in flames in seconds. Her father and mother, her house, her toys, everything she had ever known was about to be taken in flames. ((5 Years))
She was crying a weird feeling she thought wetness coming from her when it was so hot and smoky. Something was shoved into her it was wrapped in a old cloth, when she looked up she saw her parents crying and telling her that she was a good girl. She held on to that wrapped bundle like it was a life line. Her father picked her up and told her to hang on to that, she squeezed it tighter, he then threw her out of a window to safty. She was dazed, her back hurt from the glass that lodged itself into her. I'm moving so slow she thought but that was untrue she just thought she was. Suddenly the house exploded in fire while she was still mid air, she was thrown back and when she hit the ground everything went black.
When she woke up she it was day and there was nothing left of the house. "Mom? Dad? Where did you guys go?" She put her hand over her mouth and coughed. When she pulled her hand away it was covered in blood. When she tried to stand up pain shot through her, she screamed or tried to, what came out was mostly a rush of air surging out of her body. But she was on her feet, so she walked the best she could to the village still clutching the bundle her father gave her before he died. She walked in a daze after a little while the pain made her mind go blank while walking. She walked to the edge of town before her body gave out and everything went dark again.
"She walked here while in that kind of pain. No one should be alive if they did what she did. Do you hear me no one."
said a female voice.
"God there is still a pool of blood from where she collapsed. So much blood came from such a little body." a old mans voice replied.
"Its worse on the inside. Can you imagine that or are you to stupid to understand that?"
the women said.
Blackness swallowed her whole.
"I cant get that book out of her hands. I wonder what kind of book it is." the women murmered to herself as she changed Ilums bandages.
Darkness greeted her.
"you are out of the worst of it. Such a strong spirit." The women said feeding her.
Nothingness showed it wicked grin as it took her.
She screamed waking up. Darkness!
"Not the dark again I cant! No more I want light I need the light! Mom dad I'm scared!" A light appeared next to her
"Hush child its ok Granny Noris is here for you." Granny Noris the village healer? Why am I here? Where is mom and dad? Then she remembered.
These tears wont stop.
"Stop that Ilum you will mess up the bandages. You don't want to do that." Granny got up and pulled something from a cabinet and put it in some water. She poured it into a cup "Drink this it will help with he pain."
Ilum took the cup and drank all of it and sleep fell on her like a blanket.
While she was recovering she spent her time learning so she could read the book that her parents gave her before she died. She spent two years in the library and living with Granny before she learned how to do some magic. At the age of seven she took a scale from Valoo. She was too young to receive a scale normally so she used a trick she learned called Simple Trick. Valoo was enraged by it and attacked her but not before she got the scale. A scar on the bottom left side of her chin was the price for hastiness. ((7 years))
Valoo was mad and the only way that the chief could think of calming his anger was by exiling her. He was already not happy at her because of her magic, she made everything disappear and could not find out how to make it reappear. So being exiled she wondered the Great Sea and other lands.
Four long years of begging and traveling she ended up at Castle Town. Over the years of her being on the street she learned a few unsavory ways to get money, mostly by unlocking things and making peoples money disappear from their pockets. She used these skills to feed herself over the years. ((11 years))
She found a place to sleep in a ally behind a shop, everything was going great for her till a guard saw her steal a apple. The guard chased her and when he caught her he beat her for stealing just a apple. She was bleeding from cuts on her face and she had a broken arm when the guard stomped on it saying "That should stop you from stealing again!". She splinted the arm as best as she could and stopped the bleeding the best she could.
One day while she was begging for some change a monk came by and saw her with her book. "Thats a nice book do you read?" The monk bent down to eye level to Ilum. "Yes she answered." A smile appearing on her face. This was the first time anyone really talked to her over the four years of being exiled. She couldn't stop speaking to this man "I have read many books history, math, myths, everything you can think of."
"Is that so? Can you write I am looking for a scribe." He said with a smile on his face. "I can!" She said happily. "Well then" he said "why don't you come and work for me in the church for some food and a bed?"
She accepted without a second thought. When she got there the monks reset her arm and bandages, they used some healing magic so it would heal faster. They let her fully heal before putting her to work.
For six years she worked at the church improving her writing skills and her knowledge from their private library. You could say she was pretty but the scar on her chin didn't help, she had long brown hair and she kept a bell in her hair that she bought with her first earnings at the church. She was never one of the monks but they accepted her in their home. They never chided her for drinking as much as she did, they respected her for she did good work and besides drinking she never did anything wrong because she didn't need to. On the seventh year she left the church to find her own path having 100 rupees in her pouch she headed out into the world. ((17 years))
